per person for 3 to 4 hours...get a chance to see how other
pyrographic artists work. This year we will have some
hands-on demonstrations as requested by last years
participants.
Cheryl Dow - 18 years as a woodburning artist and teacher with over 50 first place ribbons and the winner of 3 Detailmaster $1,000 Best of Show awards - Author of 5 instructional woodburning pattern books and a 4 hour instructional DVD. She is a Featured Writer for the National Woodcarvers Magazine, Chip Chats. Cheryl will also have Optima woodburning equipment, Wood, Italian Poplar Plywood and all related supplies and her books and DVD's for sale and will be constantly demonstrating with hands on help for anyone at no cost. Don Worden - A self-taught pyrographer with nearly 30 years experience, specializing in animals, old buildings, bridges, mills and special projects such as homesteads. Well known in carving and woodburning for his wonderful solid point techniques, many ribbons to his credit. His landscapes are phenomenal as are his animal portraits. He is very successful as a commission artist. He will also have woodburnings for sale for those who wish to add some of his exceptional work to their collection.
Dannie Smith - The privilege of introducing Danette (Dannie) Smith to you as one of the Woodburning Celebration Show Demonstrators is a real joy for me. I met Dannie a number of years ago in Mansfield, Ohio. She lives in Bellevue, Ohio and had planned on taking the class. However, she developed tendonitis on her right wrist and was in a splint up to her elbow. I felt so bad for her and invited her to come just to observe the class. I am so glad I did! She was a bright shiny faced Sweetheart and we all enjoyed having her there, looking on.
She later
said that "I was amazed at the work the students were
doing....many of whom were just beginners. I fell in love
with the Optima burner - sure was better than the single -
temp burner I had been using. I bought the burner and two
workbooks from Cheryl and her DVD for reinforcement of what
she was teaching. She gave me encouragement and the rest
is history."
A teacher is
always hoping that his or her students will go on to
greatness and while she is mostly self taught, Dannie sure
has made her teachers happy. She has taken a lesson from
Sue Walters in Kitchener, Ontario in Canada a few years ago,
from Linda Sales and Carole Peters at Nancy Rungs' place in
Ashtabula, Ohio. She also learned a lot from the late
Linda Eaves Wolf Tape. She has a wide variety of expertise
and specializes in animals, pet and human portraits and does
quite a bit of commission work. (both color and just
woodburned monochrome)
Dannie was
born and raised in Buffalo, NY and started oil painting at
7! She was a Licensed Practical Nurse for 20 years when 2
herniated discs made her retire. She has been married for
36 years to her husband, George who is
a retired Trainmaster- Supervisor with the Norfolk
Southern Railroad. He helps Dannie with her sanding,
finishing and also builds beautiful, designer frames for
sale on their website, especially appreciated by her fellow
pyrographers.
She bought
a Walnut Hollow single temperature burner and started to
burn as a hobby in 1985. She did an amazing job with
that and after she started using the Optima, about 5 years
ago, she learned more and more at an astonishing rate. She
does exhaustive research, using photos she has taken or has
received permission to use from others to put together the
artistic pieces she produces.
Dannie also
burns on Leather, Watercolor Paper, as well as a number of
different kinds of wood. She has won numerous Woodburning
and Art Show competitions. I as well as many others have
greatly appreciated her wholehearted way of pitching in and
helping wherever and whenever she could. She helps on the
uniting-pyrographers@yahoogroups.com woodburning
chat group and has done the majority of the advertising for
us on the Celebrations Shows, using her wonderful computer
skills to great advantage on our behalf. For further
information and updates as they happen:

Last year at
the 2007 Celebration, she won numerous ribbons and impressed
everyone with her lovely pieces. I have included some here
for your enjoyment and to show the high quality of her
work. Don't miss this chance to meet and learn from this
wonderful Artist!
